Celebrating the Gift of Life this Organ Donation Week
This week, as we celebrate the power of organ donation, we want to shine a light on someone truly remarkable — Malachy, an altruistic kidney donor whose selfless act has transformed another person’s life.
Malachy made the incredible decision to donate one of his kidneys — not to a relative or friend, but to someone he had never met. He simply realised that he could save someone’s life, and he did.
“I knew I could live a full and healthy life with one kidney — and if my donation could give someone else the chance to live theirs, then it felt like the right thing to do,” – Malachy.
Because of that decision, someone who might still be waiting for a transplant — someone like Amy, whose story we shared earlier this week — now has hope, health, and a future.
Each weekend, NIKRF volunteers are at Bob Stewart’s Pub raising awareness of kidney disease and the life-changing impact of organ donation. It was through hearing these conversations that Malachy learned more about living donation — and decided to take action in the most extraordinary way.
Organ donation doesn’t just save lives — it gives families more time, more memories, and more moments together.
Please, this Organ Donation Week, take a moment to talk to your loved ones about your wishes. You have the power to change someone’s world — just as Malachy has.
