Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund (NIKRF) respects your privacy. We are committed to protecting your personal information and to being transparent about the information we hold about you.
This privacy notice lets you know what happens to any personal data that you give to us, or any that we may collect from or about you.
This policy is written in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations 2018
Who we are
NIKRF is dedicated to raising funds for crucial research aimed at understanding, preventing, and finding potential cures for kidney disease. In pursuit of this goal we collaborate closely with persons and their families affected by kidney disease across Northern Ireland. We are supported by Consultant Nephrologists, Transplant Surgeons, and Scientific Advisors. Since our charity was founded over fifty years ago, we have invested millions of pounds into research. As the only charity in Northern Ireland focused exclusively on kidney research, we allocate 90% of our income directly to this cause.

Purpose of this Privacy Notice
Whenever you interact with us, be it through post, email, telephone, our website, face-to-face interactions, or via social media, we may collect data and information about you. This might include:
- Your first name, surname, and title
- Contact details: Your address, telephone number/s, and email address
- Payment details, including card or bank information for direct debits or transfers
- Other information depending on the type of interaction such as health data or ethnic information
- Your photograph
You may give us your personal data when you sign up as a family or friend, request a service, sign up to an event, fundraise for us or carry out a financial transaction.
How do we use your personal information?
- To send you information you have requested on the work of the charity, our activities and our events
- To acknowledge a donation
- To reclaim gift aid on donations at your instruction
- To register you for an event
- For administration purposes
- To further our charitable aims including fundraising activities
- To carry out research, if you are a carer or patient participating in any of our research projects
When we collect your personal data, there is always a reason behind it. In addition, we will only ask you for special category personal data, for example, health information, when there is a clear reason for doing so and we will tell you what that reason is. Your data also allows us to develop a better understanding of our supporters, allowing us to fundraise more efficiently and effectively so that we can be there for people and their families.

If we collect personal data from you, we will only do so with your consent. NIKRF respects any personal information you share with us and we promise to keep it safe. We will never sell your data and we will safeguard your personal information in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018
We will seek explicit consent to collect and use any sensitive information, such as your experience of kidney disease or other illnesses, and we will explain how we will use it, if you volunteer to share it. If you don’t want to give us information, it will not affect the other services we provide.
There may be times when it will be beneficial to share some of your personal information with third parties in order to avail of certain services that can benefit you.
Data Security
It is our policy to ensure that all Personal Data held by us is handled correctly and appropriately according to the nature of the information. We have put in place appropriate security measures to prevent your personal information from being accidentally lost, used or accessed in an unauthorised way, altered or disclosed.
Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect all personal information which you transmit to us, you do so at your own risk.
Data Retention
We will only use your personal information for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it is processed or for compatible legal purposes including for satisfying legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.
Controller
NIKRF is the controller and is responsible for your personal data. We are responsible for overseeing questions in relation to this privacy policy.
