Farewell Message from Outgoing NIKRF Chair Susan Kee
Susan, the outgoing Chair of the Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund (NIKRF), reflects on her four-year tenure which began amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have been honoured to hold the post of Chair of the NIKRF for the past four years. I am passionate about this charity as it is the only one in Northern Ireland dedicated to raising money for research into kidney disease. For over 50 years, NIKRF has facilitated the publication of hundreds of research papers and supported numerous renal consultants and scientists through our award of grants. This progress is thanks to our hardworking volunteers and benefactors.
“In the past 15 years alone, I have witnessed significant improvements in renal services, with Belfast City Hospital’s transplantation unit being recognized as a worldwide centre of excellence. These advancements greatly enhance the quality of life for renal patients. Despite the many challenges, especially during COVID-19, the charity has made remarkable strides. Sadly, we have lost many members during this time, are now looking for the next generation to help us continue raising vital awareness and funds for kidney research.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our board members, family and friends, medical and scientific advisors, and researchers for their warmth and support during my tenure. I am excited to see what our new Chair, Rev. Jim McCaughan, will bring to the role.”
Susan’s leadership has been instrumental in navigating the charity through a challenging period, and NIKRF looks forward to continuing its mission to beat kidney disease under Rev. McCaughan’s guidance.
