‘Kidney Disease is a Public Health Emergency that Threatens to Overwhelm the NHS.’

Altnagelving and Omagh Renal Units – In a powerful demonstration of her commitment to kidney health, dedicated renal nurse, Hannah Johns who is the current Miss Northern Ireland, has partnered with the charity the Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund (NIKRF) to raise awareness about kidney disease and the importance of funding research into its causes, treatment and prevention. As she prepares for the Miss World competition, which embodies the theme of “Beauty with a Purpose,” Hannah’s advocacy shines a light on a vital cause that impacts countless lives worldwide.

Last week, Hannah visited two satellite dialysis units at Altnagelvin and Omagh hospitals, where she received a warm welcome from staff and patients. The experience highlighted the remarkable renal services in Northern Ireland—an undeniable success story within the NHS, made possible by the dedication of nurses and medical professionals who tirelessly support their patients.

“For over 50 years, the Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund has been the only charity in Northern Ireland focused solely on kidney research,” says Hannah. “Through strategic investments in projects and with their team of medical and scientific advisors, they work tirelessly to develop evidence-based best practices that can transform patient care.”

During her visit, Hannah met with patients, including Gary, who shared his experience: “From day one in the renal unit, the nurses and doctors went above and beyond for my well-being.” His story is a testament to the compassionate care provided in these units, where patients travel from Tyrone, Derry/Londonderry and Fermanagh three times a week for dialysis therapy.

Hannah Johns added, “Listening to patients’ stories inspires us and underscores the importance of compassion in healthcare. Every voice matters, and together, we can foster hope and knowledge for those affected by renal conditions. I am honoured to work alongside NIKRF to spread awareness and support crucial research in kidney health.”
